Orthotics

What are custom orthotics and why do I need them?

Orthotics are custom foot supports that fit in your shoes. They are specially designed, specifically for the individual to help support and improve foot posture. They are used to correct the imbalance in the arches of your feet, from supporting a flat foot or low arch as well as supporting and reducing a high arch, to assisting people who have an imbalance in the feet, ankle, knees, legs and hips. They are also used for athletes to help correct any foot problems that could impede their performance. Most people have these imbalances and can benefit from a pair of orthotics to help keep proper posture and stance. Custom orthotics reduce pain, ankle instability, stress to fragile joints and shock to the lower extremities.

Very often the source of your neck, back and knee pain may be in your feet. When foot position is incorrect, your entire body structure is weakened and out of kilter, leading to painful conditions all the way through the body. Think of your body as a car body, when the wheels of your car are out of alignment the body of the car starts to shake, the welded joints of the assembled parts are under excessive strain and the automobile starts to break down prematurely. This same sequence occurs with the human body. Therefore, it becomes very important to align your body. Custom made foot orthotics will help to realign your body and reduce the stress on your back, knees and feet. They also create increased comfort, better fitting footwear, greater energy tranmission and proper biomechanical alignment.

Shin Splints, tendonitis, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, ITBS, limb length discrepancy, stress fracture, and compartment syndrome may all be mechanically induced. Many of these problems are a result of structural problems and abnormal functions resulting in hyperpronation and excessive tibial rotation.

Samuel Gaffey has had success in treating these problems with various biomechanical aids including custom made orthotics, so call the office and make an appointment today 02 4454 4155
